Invisalign: Frequently Asked Questions
At our dental practice, we know that worries about the appearance of your teeth can prevent you from showing off your smile. We offer practical support for our patients in finding the best orthodontic solution for their situation. One of the most popular ways to straighten your teeth is through the Invisalign system, which is designed to provide real correction for the misalignment of your teeth while allowing you to enjoy a more natural appearance during the process.
What Alignment Issues Can Invisalign Treat?
Invisalign aligner trays are made from a highly flexible plastic that is known as SmartTrack. This plastic can slowly but surely move your teeth into the proper alignment. The course of treatment consists of multiple aligners that must be used in the proper order to achieve the most comfortable and positive results for you or your family members.
Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign is almost invisible when it is in place. The clear plastic used for the aligners can barely be noticed when you are speaking or interacting with others. This can help you to manage the process of realigning your teeth without stress and worry associated with the appearance of traditional metal braces.
Is Invisalign Right for You?
Some patients should consider other alternatives to Invisalign systems. These include the following groups:
- Children with teeth that are still growing and changing
- People who are not concerned with the appearance of metal braces and are looking for the most affordable option for themselves and their families
- Those who cannot commit to wearing the aligners for at least 20 hours each day
- People with severely misaligned teeth
However, if you are looking for an almost invisible solution for correcting minor to moderate misalignments of your teeth, Invisalign is a great way to manage this task effectively. Our dentists will work with you to determine whether you are a good candidate for Invisalign or if another orthodontic solution might be better for you.
What Should You Know About the Invisalign Process?
Your first step in seeking Invisalign services from our office will be to contact us and to make an appointment for your initial consultation. During this visit, we will discuss your orthodontic options and the best and most effective ways to realign your teeth to improve your bite and to enhance your smile. If you choose Invisalign as your preferred method for dealing with crooked teeth, we will move on to the next step.
During your second visit with our office, we will typically take impressions of your teeth and, in some cases, X-rays to determine the exact correction needed to achieve the most beautiful smile. This will allow us to obtain Invisalign aligner trays that are designed specifically for your teeth.
Invisalign consists of a series of aligner trays that are designed to be used in sequence. The first aligner moves teeth only a small amount. Each successive aligner tray moves the affected teeth even further until, after a long series of trays and months of wearing the Invisalign system, your teeth are aligned properly. This can enhance your ability to bite and chew while ensuring that your teeth are as straight and even as possible.
Each aligner is worn for about two weeks before it is discarded and the next aligner is used. The entire process usually takes between 10 and 18 months to complete, although some patients will see faster results and some will take longer to achieve the proper alignment for their teeth.
You will need to visit our office every four to six weeks to check the progress of your teeth straightening process. This will allow you to feel more confident about your teeth and will ensure the best results for you.
In What Ways Will Invisalign Impact My Daily Activities?
The adjustment period for Invisalign aligners typically lasts for less than a week. Most patients can speak and sleep normally after just a few hours or a day of wearing these aligners. Because Invisalign fits tightly over the teeth, most of our patients feel comfortable and get used to the system very quickly.
You will still need to brush and floss your teeth normally. This will require you to remove the Invisalign trays. Your aligner will also need to be removed when eating or drinking. Food and drink could otherwise stain your aligner and could make it more visible to other people, and trapped food can lead to cavities or other dental hygiene issues. Additionally, the Invisalign system is not designed to stand up to chewing and biting pressure that is applied when eating food.
Invisalign should be worn during sleep to achieve the full 20 to 22 hours of wear required to achieve the best results. In most cases, our patients do not notice the Invisalign system at night after the first few days of wearing aligners.
Throughout the process, our dental team will be here to answer any questions and to help you manage any issues that may arise during your Invisalign treatment. We are committed to helping you achieve the most beautiful smiles for yourself and your family.
What Happens After the Invisalign Process Is Complete?
When you have completed the full course of aligners included in your Invisalign treatment, you may be prescribed a retainer to wear for a few hours a day. This dental device will help to prevent your teeth from moving out of position after you are done with Invisalign. Many of our patients, however, can go directly from Invisalign to no orthodontic correction at all.
